Tsinghua University signed agreements on further cooperation and exchanges with the University of Bologna and the UN World Food Programme (WFP) during President Qiu Yong’s recent visit to Italy.

On Friday, the Tsinghua delegation led by the president met with Francesco Ubertini, rector  of the University of Bologna. They exchanged views on the feasibility of cooperation in student exchange and scientific research.

Qiu pointed out that the University of Bologna is the origin of modern universities that has enrolled students from all over Europe since its establishment in 1088, while Tsinghua University, founded in 1911 and to celebrate its 110th anniversary next year, has taken internationalization as a major part in its development.

"I was impressed by Bologna's prioritizing academic study and students," Qiu said. He expects the two universities to expand cooperation in diversified areas and disciplines so that they can play a crucial role when facing the challenges of the time.

Ubertini introduced the University of Bologna’s history and recent development and agreed that more cooperation modes could be explored.

The delegation also visited the Permanent Representation of China to the UN Agencies for Food and Agriculture in Rome on Monday.

Qiu briefed Ambassador and Permanent Representative Niu Dun on Tsinghua's implementation of global strategies. He also expressed thanks for the office’s care and support extended to Tsinghua students who have interned in international organizations.

Niu said that Tsinghua could make a unique contribution to the UN's food and agriculture work with its advantages in basic sciences and talent training.

Later that day, the delegation also visited WFP headquarters in Rome and met with David Beasley, Executive Director of the WFP, and Amir Mahmoud Abdulla, Executive Deputy Director.

Qiu said that Tsinghua attaches great importance to the UN's implementation of Sustainable Development Goals and ending hunger worldwide by 2030.

He stated his hopes that the two sides will establish long-term partnerships based on the new agreement and cooperate across wider areas of interest such as teacher exchange, student internships, expert communication and joint scientific research, contributing to sustainable development, hunger elimination and food security.

Beasley welcomed the delegation and stressed that the cooperation agreement with Tsinghua means that the WFP will receive academic and talent support from one of world's most brilliant institutes.

Qiu, Beasley and Abdulla also discussed cooperation on rural transformation, sustainable infrastructure and human resource development.
